We are excited to announce that Freedom Shores Resort has joined the Whitsundays Healthy Heart Project – an initiative that aims to promote sustainable tourism practices and reduce carbon emissions in the Whitsunday region. The project is a collaborative effort between the Whitsunday Regional Council and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation.
The project’s main objective is to decarbonize the tourism sector in the Whitsundays, by reducing the industry’s impact on the environment and improving the health of the Great Barrier Reef. The project aims to achieve EarthCheck and Sustainable Destination accreditation for the region and set ambitious targets for climate change mitigation.
Freedom Shores is just one of 42 local businesses, involved in the project, including marine tourism operators, marinas, and island resorts – all with a common goal to lower our environmental footprint and support sustainable recovery. The project aims to recruit a minimum of 80 tourism operators and related businesses to actively measure and reduce their carbon footprint, building resilience to climate change and creating green marketing opportunities.
As part of our commitment to the project, Freedom Shores Resort will be introducing a range of initiatives that promote sustainable tourism practices and reduce our carbon emissions. First on the agenda is to tackle our waste management systems and investigate better recycling collection methods. We are also rethinking our in-room luxury items and replacing with sustainable products and will be promoting environmental awareness among our guests.
We are proud to be a part of this initiative and are committed to making a positive contribution to our environment and our community. We believe that by working together, we can create a sustainable future for the Whitsundays and make a significant impact on the health of the Great Barrier Reef.
